April is the month for Autism Awareness. This is my first of the daily posts through April regarding Autism Spectrum Disorders.
WHAT IS AUTISM?
Autism and Autsim Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are both a general term for a group of complex disorders of brain development.
People with ASDs may have problems with social, emotional, and communication skills. They might repeat certain behaviors and might not want change in their daily activities. The disorder makes it hard for them to communicate and relate to the outside world. Many people with ASDs also have unusual ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to things and sensations.
ASD can also be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. The thinking and learning abilities of people with ASDs can vary—from gifted to severely challenged. The most obvious signs and symptoms of Autism tend to emerge between 2 and 3 years of age and last throughout a person’s life.
